Gioioso (for three)
a ballo for three, created by Master Giovani Ambrogio (Guglielmo)
Source: AW Smith (3 mms)
Music: any Rostiboli Gioioso
Starting position: side by side, holding hands (by instructions, woman in the middle)
Section 1:
1&2 Together, 2 riprese, left and right
3 Middle goes forward 2 sempi, left and right, and turns to End 1 (on the original left)
4&5 Middle and End 1 join left hands and circle with 2 doppi, left and right; middle ends up back in starting place
6&7 Together, 2 riprese, left and right
8 Middle goes forward 2 sempi, left and right, and turns to End 2 (on the original right)
9&10 Middle and End 2 join right hands and circle with 2 doppi, left and right; middle ends up back in starting place
Section 2:
11&12 Together, 2 riprese, left and right
13-15 The Ends switch places with 2 sempi, left and right, and 2 doppi, left and right - End 1 goes inside (near the Middle), End 2, outside
16&17 Together, 2 riprese, left and right
18-20 Ends switch back, 2 sempi, left and right, 2 doppi, left and right - End 2 goes inside, End 1, outside
Section 3:
21&22 Together, 2 riprese, left and right
23 Together, forward 2 sempi, left and right
24 and a doppio, left
25&26 Ends circle to the right with two doppi, right and left
as the Middle does 2 riprese, right and left
27&28 All volta del gioioso (2 semip, right and left, ripresa right)
29-36 Repeat 21-28
Section 4:
37-52 16 saltarelli (the instructions say 12, but most recordings to 16)
Section 5:
53 Middle scosso, Ends respond
54 Middle does a doppio, left, away, alone
55 Ends scosso, Middle responds
56 Ends doppio, left, to catch up to the middle.
57 Middle scosso, Ends respond
58 Middle does a doppio, left, away, alone
59 Ends scosso, Middle responds
60 Ends doppio, left, to catch up to the middle; mezavolta (so the ends "switch" places)
Most recorded sources repeat twice.
If there are three repeats, then in measure 56, instead of simply mezavolta-ing, End 1 will doppio to the opposite end
of the line, switching the order (Middle becomes End 1, End 2 becomes Middle, End 1 becomes End 2). And on the second
repeat, the same switching occurs (ending up E2, E1, Middle); on the third, switch back to starting positions.
